A Mourning Picture For Elijah Lumbard (Connecticut, 1778-1821)
Circa 1821
watercolor and ink on paper, set in period frame with gilt stencil glass; the monument register reads, "Affectionately inscribed to the memory of Mr. Elijah Lumbard Who Died August 6 1821. Aged 45 years. The sighs of thy widow and the tears of thy orphans embalm thy memory", the panel to the right further inscribed, "Few friends have we on earth, and when they part, The nerve unwinds whose tension tears the heart."
